When to Use the FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensor?

The FreeStyle Libre 3 sensor is ideal for people with type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes. It offers continuous glucose monitoring without the need for traditional finger prick tests.

It offers ongoing peace of mind by tracking glucose levels in your interstitial fluid and sending automatic readings to your smartphone.

The sensor can help you understand your blood glucose levels and identify trends, such as which foods impact them. In addition to providing real-time glucose readings, the Libre 3 Sensor also helps your diabetes healthcare team monitor your condition and provide bespoke recommendations.

    Age Restrictions

The Freestyle Libre 3 system can be used by adults and children aged four and over, making it ideal for parents who want to monitor their children's levels throughout the day.

How to Use the FreeStyle Libre 3 Continuous Glucose Monitoring System?

When using the Libre 3 Sensor, please follow these steps:

    • Wash your upper arm with mild soap and water, then use an alcohol wipe to clean it.
    • Once dry, you can use the application to apply the FreeStyle Libre 3 sensor. All you need to do is place the applicator over the site and apply pressure until you hear a click. Then, wait a few seconds and remove the applicator.
    • Before receiving glucose readings, you'll need to set up the app, which is relatively simple. Once the app setup is complete, the sensor will send automatic readings to your phone.
    • If you want to share your readings with healthcare professionals or are monitoring a child's levels, you can do so through the LibreLinkUp App.
    • After 14 days, you should remove the sensor and repeat the application process.

When to Avoid Using the Sensor?

In most cases, the FreeStyle Libre 3 sensor is suitable for most people with diabetes, but there are some cases when it might not be the best choice for your needs. They include:

    • Age Restrictions: The sensor is only suitable for adults and children over four years old.
    • Critical Care: If you're in an intensive care unit or your doctor advises against relying on the sensor, you should avoid using it, as the readings shouldn't solely dictate direct insulin dosing.
    • Skin Sensitivities: If you have sensitive skin or allergies to medical devices and adhesives, you should avoid applying the sensor as it might cause reactions.
    • High Vitamin C Use: Taking high doses (exceeding 500 mg) of Vitamin C daily can cause false results, which may impact your dosing choices.

    Precautions

Remember to remove the sensor if you're having a CT or MRI scan, as it can damage the device. While most people can wear it when having an X-ray, it's best to inform the healthcare professional beforehand.

If your blood glucose meter appears damaged or is past its expiration date, please use a new sensor, as your results might be compromised.

  • FAQ

    • Is the FreeStyle Libre 3 compatible with all smartphones?

The FreeStyle Libre 3 System is only compatible with certain mobile devices and operating systems. If you use Android or iOS operating systems, you should have no problems connecting the sensor to your phone, but it currently doesn't support Windows smartphones.

If you're unsure of device compatibility, please check the website for more information.

    • Does the FreeStyle Libre 3 system require finger pricks?

No, the best thing about this system is that it ensures that you don't need to perform a finger prick test every time you want to measure your levels.

Instead, you'll apply the sensor with an applicator and connect it to your smartphone. You'll then receive minute-by-minute updates that will help you identify whether you have high or low glucose levels.

    • Is the FreeStyle Libre 3 sensor water-resistant?

Yes, you can wear the sensor when you shower, exercise, or swim. However, it shouldn't be exposed to water for longer than half an hour.

    • Can I use the sensor if I don't have diabetes or have pre-diabetes?

No, please don't use the sensor if you want to check your blood sugar and don't have diabetes. It won't provide accurate results and is only designed for diabetes management.

    • How do I get glucose readings?

The sensor will automatically send readings to your phone using Bluetooth technology. However, if you accidentally turn your Bluetooth off, the sensor won't be able to send this information.

    • Do I need to scan the sensor with my phone?

Yes, but you only need to do this when you apply a new sensor. Once you scan it, the sensor kit will need 60 minutes to warm up; it will automatically send glucose readings to the app.

    • Is the FreeStyle Libre 3 more accurate than previous versions?

While all FreeStyle Libre systems, including the FreeStyle Libre 2, are highly accurate, this system has demonstrated more accuracy than previous kits. As long as you follow the instructions on the sensor kit packages and apply the kit correctly, it will send instant updates.

    • What can affect sensor readings?

Your sensor sends glucose values from interstitial fluid, which is generally accurate. However, it lags behind your glucose levels by a few minutes. So, when your body experiences rapid changes in glucose, it can compromise your readings.

Taking high amounts of Vitamin C can also affect sensor readings, which means you won't be able to assess glucose trends properly. Understanding these risks can help you avoid errors in insulin dosages.

    • Can I share my blood glucose levels with others?

Yes, you can use the LibreLinkUp app to share your data with up to 20 people - including family members, friends, and your diabetes healthcare professional. This allows others to track your glucose history and identify any potential issues.

While the FreeStyle Libre 3 system is generally considered safe, like any medical device, it can have potential side effects. It's important to be aware of these and to consult with your healthcare provider if you experience any significant issues.

    • Do the FreeStyle Libre systems need to be calibrated?

No, the FreeStyle Libre sensor is calibrated during the manufacturing process so you don't have to. The Sensor is activated by scanning and then, after a 1 hour warm up period, it starts to record glucose readings automatically.

    • Can the FreeStyle Libre systems be used to make insulin dosing decisions?

Yes. People with diabetes can use FreeStyle Libre sensors with the FreeStyle LibreLink or FreeStyle Libre 3 app to better understand the impact of actions like eating, exercise, and taking insulin based on their glucose levels. They can also make day-to-day therapy decisions when using the apps with FreeStyle Libre sensors, including insulin dosing decisions, based on guidance from their healthcare professional.

    • Can the FreeStyle Libre systems be used by children?

The FreeStyle Libre systems are indicated for measuring interstitial fluid glucose levels in people (age 4 and older) with diabetes mellitus. The indication for children (age 4 - 12) is limited to those who are supervised by a caregiver who is at least 18 years of age. A caregiver at least 18 years old is responsible for supervising, managing, and assisting the child in using the FreeStyle Libre system and interpreting its readings.

    • Are there any clinical studies that support the use of the FreeStyle Libre systems?

The FreeStyle Libre systems have been studied in two landmark randomised controlled trials (RCTs) which demonstrated improvements in diabetes outcomes for both Type 1 and Type 2 patients with diabetes, those are:

      1. Bolinder J,et al. Novel glucose-sensing technology and hypoglycaemia in type 1 diabetes a multicentre, non-masked, randomized controlled trial. The Lancet 2016.
      2. Haak T, Hanaire H, Aijan R et al. Flash glucose-sensing technology as a replacement for blood glucose monitoring for the management of insulin-treated type 2 diabetes: a multicentre, open-label radomised controlled trial. Diabetes Ther. 2016.
    • Can the FreeStyle Libre systems be used by dialysis patients?

The FreeStyle Libre systems have not been evaluated for use by persons on dialysis.

    • How can I connect with family and caregivers remotely?

If you are using the FreeStyle LibreLink or FreeStyle Libre 3 mobile app to monitor your glucose levels, you can invite your family/caregiver to access your glucose data remotely, anytime by using LibreLinkUp app. Visit the LibreLinkUp page to see how to do this.

    • Can I use the FreeStyle Libre systems on animals?

Alternatively, you can email yourself or print a PDF of your reports to share with your healthcare team.

    • Do I need to scan the FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensor to get a glucose reading?

No. With the FreeStyle Libre 3 System, you do not need to scan to receive a glucose reading. When your FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensor is paired with your smartphone, you will automatically see the latest glucose information after you open the FreeStyle Libre 3 app or when you receive an alarm notification on your compatible smartphone.

    • Do I still have to finger prick?

Finger pricks are required if your glucose readings and alarms do not match symptoms or expectations.

    • Do I need to carry a separate blood glucose meter?

There's no need to use a separate blood glucose meter for routine testing. The FreeStyle LibreLink and FreeStyle Libre 3 apps allow you to get glucose results as often as you like. If you're using the FreeStyle Libre 2 system, simply scan your FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor with your phone to get a glucose reading. If you're using the FreeStyle Libre 3 system, glucose readings will be streamed to your phone every minute.

    • Should my child use the FreeStyle Libre 3 app?

When starting a new sensor, users must choose which device they would like to use and if they want to share glucose data with their caregiver or healthcare provider.

The FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensor can be used with the FreeStyle Libre 3 app.

    • Does the FreeStyle Libre 3 system work with LibreLinkUp?

    • Skin irritation, such as redness, swelling, and itching, may mean you're experiencing an allergic reaction.
    • Mild discomfort after using the sensor applicator, including rashes, itching and burning sensations. More severe reactions include bruising and bleeding.
    • If you suffer from excess sweat or don't apply the sensor correctly, it might fall off.
